Leaking Roof Valley: Repair or Replacement?
Homeowner advice from Roofing Ninjas · 14 September 2026
The valley is the junction where two roof slopes meet. When it leaks, the important question is how the whole detail is working, including the covering on either side.
What to ask the roofer to explain
Ask where the defect is, what material forms the valley and whether the surrounding tiles and underlay need lifting. A quotation should describe the work beyond the visible surface. A small-looking defect may need a wider opening to form a reliable connection; the proposed scope should make that clear.
What a valley renewal can involve
On our Halewood valley project, we opened up the valley, removed the old detail and fitted a new lead lining. We then reinstated the adjoining roof covering around the renewed channel. The before-and-after photographs show that particular roof; they are not a specification for every valley.
Ask which lining is proposed for your roof, how it joins the surrounding covering and what will be checked beneath it. The quotation should distinguish replacing the valley detail from replacing the whole roof.
A patch and a renewal are different proposals
A limited repair may be appropriate where the surrounding detail remains serviceable. Renewal becomes a different discussion where there are repeated defects or the existing arrangement cannot be repaired satisfactorily. Ask what condition will remain after either option and whether a temporary repair is being offered as temporary.
Why neighbouring roof features matter
Chimneys, dormers and changes in roof direction can make the valley more involved. At Ruff Lane in Ormskirk, removing a large chimney that intersected the valley also meant reconstructing the valley around the altered roof. It was not simply a matter of taking bricks down and filling the visible gap.
Evidence you can review
Our Halewood valley renewal gives an example of this type of work. It is evidence of a particular project, not a diagnosis of your roof. Send photographs you already have and explain when the leak appears. If you are considering a complete re-roof, make sure valley work is explicitly included or excluded in the quotation.

Tell us about your leaking valley
Send your postcode, where you have noticed water and when it appears, such as during heavy rain. Include photographs you already have or can take safely from the ground or indoors. You do not need to decide whether the valley needs patching or renewing before contacting us.
Request a roof valley repair assessment. Sending an enquiry does not book an appointment or commit you to work.
Considering a complete roof replacement?
We also carry out complete roof replacement across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and surrounding areas. If the wider roof needs renewal, use the replacement route below; a leaking valley alone does not establish that the whole roof needs replacing.
