A 16-foot chimney at the centre of a larger renovation
This chimney removal on Ruff Lane in Ormskirk involved a stack standing 16 feet high and well over 1,500 bricks. A structural engineer had requested its removal as part of renovations inside the property. The chimney also intersected the full roof valley, so removing the brickwork was only one part of the job.
Removing the stack and changing the roof framing
We dismantled the chimney and altered the surrounding roof framing to suit the changed layout. The opening left by the stack needed to become part of the roof again, with the timber work and covering brought together around the new arrangement.
Rebuilding the entire roof valley
Because the original chimney crossed the valley, we rebuilt the whole valley as part of the work. This was a substantial junction to reconstruct, rather than a small patch around a redundant chimney. The finished roof had to carry water through the valley around the replacement flue arrangement.
A liner and log burner in place of the old arrangement
The project also included dropping a liner and installing a log burner. Our photographs show the original stack, the roof opened during the work and the completed roof with the flue projecting through it.
